American Nurses Association Mourns the Passing of Dr. Linda D. Scott

ANA honors the legacy and leadership of the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Nursing

SILVER SPRING, MD – The American Nurses Association (ANA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Linda D. Scott, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FADLN, FNAP, FAAN, Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Scott was an extraordinary leader whose career advanced nursing practice, strengthened academic excellence, and championed equity across the profession. Her research, mentorship, and steadfast commitment to the well-being of nurses made a lasting impact on the field.

“Dr. Linda Scott embodied the very best of what it means to lead in nursing. She brought courage, compassion, and clarity to every role she held, always keeping nurses and the communities they serve at the center of her work. Linda was a mentor to many, a voice for equity, and a visionary who pushed the profession forward with grace and determination. Her contributions to advancing research, supporting the workforce, and elevating the profession will continue to influence generations of nurses,” said Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, President of the American Nurses Association.

ANA extends its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Scott’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many nurses and students she inspired. Her legacy will continue to guide and uplift the profession she so deeply loved.

Those who wish to honor Dr. Scott can do so by supporting the University of Wisconsin Foundation’s Linda D. Scott Inspiration Scholarship Fund, which has been established to support future nursing students who have overcome significant barriers in pursuit of their education.
