The American Nurses Association (ANA) presented seven extraordinary nurse leaders with the 2022 President’s Award at a ceremony on June 9.

Nurses of color have been harmed by past actions that impact the profession today.

Today, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Membership Assembly elected Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, of the Oregon Nurses Association as the association’s next president to represent the interests of the nation’s more than 4.3 million registered nurses.

The impact of climate change on health, solutions to address verbal abuse and workplace violence, and the nurse staffing crisis were topics of discussion during Dialogue Forums at the 2022 ANA Membership Assembly, the governing and official voting body of the American Nurses Association (ANA). Nurses and others gathered for the governance meeting which commenced on June 10 in Washington, DC. Eligible representatives will elect association leaders.

For the first time in three years, nurses, students, and other leaders gathered today in Washington, DC for ANA Hill Day on June 9, a related event to the ANA Membership Assembly Meeting June 10-11. They will bring nursing priorities to meetings with members of Congress and their staff to build support for federal legislation addressing workplace violence and burnout, preventing unnecessary delays in patient care, and removing barriers to APRN full practice authority.

ANA applauds the passage of the Improving Access to Workers’ Compensation for Injured Federal Workers Act of 2022 in the House of Representatives, which recognizes the importance of access to quality and safe patient care provided by Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in all settings and is an important step toward eliminating unnecessary federal barriers to nurses. 

A mass shooting at Saint Francis Hospital campus in Tulsa, OK on June 1 that left four people dead, including multiple health care professionals, is the latest act of gun violence in a recent uptick of mass shootings nationwide. The American Nurses Association (ANA) applauds the recommendations laid out in the Surgeon General’s Advisory Addressing Health Worker Burnout to provide accessible mental health resources, adequate staffing, and safer work environments for health care professionals, including nurses.

ANA stands in solidarity with the individuals, families and communities impacted and calls for meaningful action now to address this tragic, ever-growing epidemic of gun violence.
