Overview
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) are endocrine emergencies. Hospitalizations for diabetes and DKA are rising, possibly because of increased diabetes prevalence and higher insulin costs. HHS is associated with high mortality risks, which is particularly worrisome during the COVID-19 pandemic, when healthcare resources have been stretched thin. To help ensure early identification and treatment of these conditions, this article provides an overview of both.
