The ANCC Institute for Credentialing Research supports research-related processes and activities for ANCC organizational and individual credentialing programs, including Accreditation, Certification, Magnet Recognition, and Pathway to Excellence. Externally, the ANCC research program works to promote the growth of credentialing research.

READI: Readiness Evaluation & Discharge Interventions

ANCC invites Magnet® organizations to submit expressions of interest to participate in a 3-year multisite research study beginning in 2014. This quasi-experimental study will test the implementation of discharge readiness assessment as a standard nursing practice on readmission and emergency department utilization. The study was selected based on a competitive request for proposals.

Study Aims:

Test the impact of unit-based implementation of discharge readiness assessment on readmission and emergency department use.
Determine cost-benefit of implementation, comparing cost savings from reduced post-discharge utilization against implementation costs.

Organizations may want to participate if they are:

Acute care hospitals with adult medical-surgical units interested in improving the discharge process; and willing to commit to a 3-year research project, and integrate discharge readiness assessment into standard patient care.

Organizational commitment involves:

Including 2 hospital units in the study, 1 control and 1 implementation unit.
Assigning an RN as study coordinator for approximately 0.2 FTE for 24-27 months.
Training all nurses on the implementation unit in study procedures.
